Meanwhile, the new fungi survey project has already started, and is available to you right now at iNaturalist.org. Here is the project - https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/wms-2020-first-virtual-foray

To join, you will need to be logged into an iNaturalist account, which is free. Questions about iNaturalist.org? Comments or ideas for fungi survey projects?

Attached is a basic tutorial for iNaturalist made by us, and the website has its own here:
https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started
https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/video+tutorials

Eventually, we have plans to work with FunDiS (formerly NAMP) to produce rigorous citizen science fungi survey data together, but iNaturalist is a good first step and is a citizen science project in its own right!

This "Virtual Foray" through iNat will also provide WMS members with a chance to connect, help ID each other's finds, and see cool fungi -- just like we would at the end of a group foray. At our Zoom meetings, we can discuss project stats and highlight observations.

If you would like to get into even more online fungi communities, also check out, mushroomobserver.org, We don't have any project on there, but it is a good resource, too. We think it would be a good idea to make your username there and on iNaturalist match, so we can all find each other easier on both sites just by going through the list of people joining the project on iNaturalist! Alternatively, you could simply list your username for the one in the profile of the other.

Our History

Wisconsin Mycological Society (WMS), was established many years ago, dedicated to the study and enjoyment of wild mushrooms and other fungi. Education, photography, safety and nature are our goals.  We do not ID mushrooms through this website.  If you are in need of an ID consider Wild Food Wisconsin or Mushroom Identification Group.
If You Suspect a Poisoning
If you suspect that you have consumed a poisonous mushroom, contact a physician, the closest hospital ER or dial 911.
