However you can plan for next year! the 16th Annual Hiles foray will be July 18th through July 21st, 2024

If you were planning to attend with someone already registered
to Hiles but simply forgot to complete your registration on time... we MAY be able to make an exception and allow you to register late for 2023. You need to contact WMS to arrange this! We may not be able to get back to you right away but the email will be checked at least once daily.

Hiles: the “Mushroom Capital of Wisconsin!”
This region features a diverse mix of trees, including beech, hemlock, spruce, tamarack, paperbark and gray birch, sugar maple, hop hornbeam and red oak, primarily, leading to a diverse mix of mycoflora. You can see just a fraction of what we found last year here, in this iNaturalist project for the 2022 event.

Schedule Summary:
Thursday:
Check-in, sign up for your trails, go on a mini-foray right around the check-in area, meet up at Mainstreet Ed's for dinner (everyone on their own checks, unless someone buys a round), and get to know each other.

Friday: First day of forays into the woods! There will be multiple trails, each with their own foray leader, to sign up for. Each of these trails will be described for you when you check-in and sign up for your forays. Some will be all-day, others in the morning or afternoon only. We will meet back for a potluck and social followed by a talk with the foray leaders about what we have found, going over the specimens in person. At least one of these trails should have chanterelles in profusion, and at least one will focus on the intense myco-diversity in this part of our state.

Saturday: Second day of forays, with all-day, morning-only and afternoon-only options once again. Our final table talk will end with our total species count, announced by the lead mycologist, and a comparison to previous Hiles foray counts and unique species found. Prizes may be given for various categories of "best find", and we will then enjoy a presentation on lichens!

Sunday: One last local mini-foray on-site in Hiles available in the morning, clean up, check out, and saying goodbyes.
These tickets are to the event itself; each person arrange our own lodging and food unless otherwise specified above, as in the potluck on Friday evening.
