Stef Lee grew up in a home where foraging was a way of life. Wild edibles and home raised foods were a staple at the table. A family trip to Slovakia in 2002 sparked her love of fungi when relatives took her on a foray, afterwards creating culinary masterpieces with spoils of their hunt. She was hooked.
She discovered WMS in 2011 and immediately joined. Her first Hiles event (also in 2011) she met Britt Bunyard, Patrick Leacock and Bruch Reed and was amazed at the skill level of ID and fungal diversity (not to mention Latin nomenclature!). Since then, she has remained a WMS member, and advocates for the club every chance she gets. She has attended numerous years of the Northwoods foray in Cable, including the NAMA event in 2017. She also began attending and eventually assisting (as a foray leader) with the Women’s Foray which was hosted by Tavis Lynch for a number of years.
Stef lives near Stevens Point with her partner Jimer. They run a production company and host the annual Jackpine Jamboree where she does booking, budgeting, and web design for the festival, as well as maintaining their social media presence. She plays upright bass in a bluegrass band (Sloppy Joe) since 1998, and leads a side project band (The Foragers). She makes handmade goats milk soap, is a silk-screener, freelance artist, and graphic designer. She raises rabbits, enjoys fishing, hunting, creating culinary art with her foraged items, and attending folk festivals with her Mother to keep their Slovak heritage alive.
Stef hopes to be able to offer some of the skills she has honed in her years of foraging and festival/event production to WMS. She has been a member of the club for almost 12 years now, and is looking forward to the opportunity to step up her involvement.
